In an official statement issued yesterday, Valve announced that they acquired the developer Turtle Rock. It's no small news since it's the first time that Valve acquire another game developer (the Portal team aside, but they were hired rather than bought). It's one step more in the electronic publishing area for Valve via their Steam system, and according to Valve, it allows them to get a base to develop their activities in Los Angeles (home of Turtle Rock). Of course, this acquisition particularly targets one game that immediately rejoins the Valve roster, Left 4 Dead. This online cooperative survival horror action title based on the Source engine bears high expectations for Valve. Turtle Rock was known before to have worked on most of the Counter-Strike related stuff (Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Counter Strike: Source) For Valve it seems to be a logical step since the bounds between them and Turtle Rock have always been there. But it would be interesting to see if Valve is willing to attempt acquiring other assets in the developing area. As for Left 4 Dead itself, things are still a bit blurry but more information is available from the official site. |
