Episodic Game Concept? Definitely Not Working For Valve. PDF Print E-mail
General News

Just a little thought that has no other basis than the fact that I was replaying Half-Life Episode 2 the other day and that we're still without news of Episode 3, almost 2 years later. I think that it's safe to assume that Valve brilliantly demonstrated that the episodic concept is a failure regarding big projects although it works for small scale games like Telltale's Sam & Max that generated 2 seasons of respectively 6 and 5 episode released at the rate of 1 per month. But obviously, Half-Life is not Sam & Max and although Valve came with the "episodic" idea in the fist place, they failed to maintain the real meaning of the word (2 years+ of development is OK for a full game, not for a 6 hours "episode")

LucasArts Is Resurrecting Big Time PDF Print E-mail

LucasArts and Valve announced a partnership yesterday for the digital distribution of an host of LucasArts titles. Nothing really exceptional (well aside the fact that usually LucasArts doesn't do this kind of deal) however the weird part about it is in the titles that will be distributed. You'll be able to find some fairly recent games like Star Wars Republic Commando along side some really dated titles like The Dig (that would be more fitting on another digital distribution service like GOG.com considering that this is a good and pretty *old* DOS game) or Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis dating back to 1992.

Yup.

Read the press release here.

I have no idea what the acquisition of id by Bethesda Softworks' parent company will mean to humanity as a whole, but I find the following quote somewhat reassuring...which is why they say it.

id Software will continue to operate as a studio under the direction of its founder, John Carmack. No changes will be made in the operations of id Software in the development of its games. All the principals at id Software have signed long-term employment contracts, assuring they will continue in their roles developing games at the studio.

My first review in a pretty long (and busy) time. Developed by the Ukrainian of Action Forms Ltd, Cryostasis is a survival horror game with an atmosphere really... well, freezing (not to be played in Winter). I must warn you however that this review has the particularity to overstress the technical side of things just because the performances in game have the ability to puzzle even the most seasoned reviewer. You thought that Crysis was putting your computer on its knees? Think again; you never played Cryostasis.

Now you have been warned so go read the full Cryostasis review

Viva New Vegas! ...Not To Mention A Release Date For Broken Steel PDF Print E-mail

Even though the news is a couple of days old, you haven't heard/read it yet unless you hear/read it from me. Just accept it.

Anyway, as posted on the Bethesda Blog (yes, I know: I post second- and third-hand information as "news." Bite me.), Fallout: New Vegas has been announced. Instead of Bethesda being the hamsters in the wheel this time around, this one's being developed by Obsidian Entertainment...which has a few people from Black Isle, which in turn created the original Fallout...

...of course, this apparently gives license to certain people to call this a "true" sequel to Fallout 2. Please be aware that if you're doing that, you're a complete waste of skin.

If a guy came to you asking you to open a box and that you could guess that opening it would wreck havoc to the world community leaving only little hope while keeping it tight shut would be the best thing to do peace-wise, what would you do? Of course, I'd probably wrap up the thing and throw it into the vacuum of deep space. On the other hand, Silver Sorrow would probably yell something like "I got it! I got it! Let me open the damn thing before the flavor vanishes!"... Er well... So it's not about our tastes about conspicuous boxes but bobdog experience with one. Yeah, guess what... he opened it!, Bravely and thoroughly, just to bring you, our dear readers a review of the thing.
