Yeah indeed, Far Cry 2 is in development. Well, basically it's sort of the same story than what happened to F.E.A.R. and the two upcoming projects F.E.A.R 2 and Project Origin. The first Far Cry was developed by Crytek, of course, but the title and the game was copyrighted by the publisher Ubisoft prohibiting Crytek to use the name further. It didn't really matter to Crytek anyway because they were more interested in developing Crysis than in coming with a sequel to their first winner.

But Ubisoft obviously wanted to extract more juice from the Far Cry name so they went on and started development of a #2 based on an in-house game engine (so exit the Cry Engine) codenamed Dunia. The purpose of this new engine is to accommodate for a gameplay that Ubisoft wish to be different from the first Far Cry and new environments (the game is supposed to take place in Africa).

By the beginning of December, Ubisoft was unveiling some of technical aspects of their "baby" Dunia like the integration of a fully featured day/night cycle meaning that the lighting and shadows conditions will change as the sun/moon progresse across the sky (or for the purists as the Earth revolves). This is for a part possible through a technique called Advanced Indirect Lighting that is demonstrated below:

As explained by Ubisoft, the purpose of this technique is to display all kind of shadows intensity from light gray to pure dark instead of a basic set. Another set of images allow to see how the lighting change throughout the day and the weather:

And in a last set, Ubisoft decided to show that they've put a great deal of effort in constructing not only real fire effects but also results (part of the gameplay will be your ability to spread some fires either to distract and/or to trap enemies).

The impact of this nice work on your framerate is not known as of now (in short, no rig specification is given) but it shouldn't be light. Nevertheless there are some ideas at work here. On the gameplay side, it will be a mix of shooter and tactical with some novelties like the healing system that Ubisoft want as close to the real thing as possible (with bandages, pliers to remove bullets (!)... the whole set).

Far Cry 2 is scheduled for a release during Spring 2008 and the official site is there.
