SEGA just revealed details today about their upcoming squad-based FPS titled Aliens: Colonial Marines based on the second movie in the Alien series. Licensed through an exclusive agreement with the Twentieth Century Fox, the title is set to be released for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in late 2008. Although SEGA doesn't provide any pics to go with their press release (maybe later) they go into further details. In Aliens: Colonial Marines, players are part of a United States Colonial Marine squad and must prepare to face an alien assault more intense and horrific than ever before. Driven by a compelling and original story penned by renowned writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle Aliens: Colonial Marines will retain the atmospheric look and feel of the original films while leveraging next-generation technology to create an entirely new interactive Aliens experience. Aliens: Colonial Marines is just one of the games that SEGA is currently working on based on their recently acquired Alien license (that they apparently seem intended to exhaust). Other games noticeably include a RPG for which the the known details are not overwhelming but that is being developed by Obsidian, a company with some background in this area (Neverwinter Nights 2) At that point I need to stress one thing having played and reviewed in their times the two first FPS that were released around the Alien Franchise (at least for a half, the Predator franchise being also involved), Alien vs Predator and Alien vs Predator 2. An Alien based game can be a total atmospheric blast to play when done right (Alien vs Predator 2) and it can be just quite another boring crap when done wrong for obvious easy profit from a franchise (Alien vs Predator). Up to SEGA to show us what side they're on. Since Gearbox (Half-life Opposing Force and Blue Shift, Brothers In Arms, Halo -- the first), is in charge of the development, there might be hope. Oh and the official site (with not that much), is right there. |
