Another relatively poor week on the PC gaming front that has only been saved by the release of Dead Space 2, the first "real" game available for the PC platform in this beginning of the year 2011 after the real desert that was the end of last year. Despair not, things should definitely improve from now on on the PC front. with a pack of releases to come. PC games are like wines; 2011 should be a relatively good year... if nothing gets delayed and lives up to gamers expectations (for some of them that will be a real challenge). Potential gems to come include: Dragon Age 2, The Witcher 2, F.E.A.R. 3, Deus Ex: Revolutions, Duke Nukem Forever and Mass Effect 3 among other things and possibly in that order. Yeah it's the year of series (well, except for DNF that is just a zombie, THE zombie of gaming; 12 years in the making and it died several times during the pregnancy always to be reborn again. They should turn that into a future game: DNF -- The Making).

But without anticipating -- and mindlessly derailing -- too much let's go back to this week, during which:

Electronic Arts blew my mind -- not necessarily in a good way, Cerberus reveals Bioware intentions for this year (not that these intentions weren't already known for the most part) and Bethesda had almost nothing to say -- as usual -- but made a point to say it anyway.

The question deserves to be asked after I opened my copy of Dead Space 2. What's the connection would you ask? Yeah, I was wondering about that too. The connection is that my copy included a coupon for a downloadable Dragon Age 2 bonus armor on Isaac's armor. So OK, it's not new. When Mass Effect 2 was released there were coupons for all kind of stuff including a Dragon Age armor that one could wear through Shepard's travels in the Galaxy. The fun bit though is that Dragon Age and Mass Effect were both developed by Bioware while the company has no connection with Dead Space (which is developed by Visceral Games). The only thing both franchises have in common is their publisher, Electronic Arts. Should we deduce that from now on you'll gain a new armor for an upcoming game each time you buy an EA product?

Well to be frank that was not a bad surprised as I expected nothing like that in the first place. It's not an especially good surprise either knowing the use I had for the "Dragon Blood armor" in Mass Effect 2. But it is certainly a curiosity.

Hey... Necromorphs in Dragon Age 2... that could be fun. "Chop its arm dammit! Chop-its-arm!!!"

Well "Revelations" is a bit of an overstatement but let me explain. Those who are familiar with the game knows the "Cerberus Daily News" bit. For those unfamiliar, it is a window on the right side of the main Mass Effect 2 menu which for one year displayed one "galactic" news item per day related to the game universe. This feature was only planned to run one year and so starting on January 24th, it was discontinued. Now when you get to the Mass Effect 2 menu there's only one message but that message give us a bit of info about what to expect.

Cerberus Daily News will indeed come back to life twice for a total of 3 weeks during 2011. First time will be the week preceding the release of a new DLC. Only thing currently known about this DLC is that it should be a story bridge between Mass Effect 2 and 3. Second thing we can assume is that it will be the last DLC for Mass Effect 2. No release date is given.

The second time in 2011 when the Cerberus Daily News will be fired up again will be during the two weeks preceding the release of Mass Effect 3 next December.

So there we have a picture of Bioware global activities for this year. First, release of Dragon Age 2 in March. Then a last DLC for Mass Effect 2, then possibly the first few DLC for Dragon Age 2 and finally Mass Effect 3 (don't quote me on the timing though, they might do things in a slightly different order as the teams working on Mass Effect and Dragon Age are not the same.

This week we learned from Pete Hynes (Bethesda Softworks public relations and marketing director) that more DLC are planned for Obsidian Entertainment Fallout New Vegas. So what will they be? When will they be available and more importantly will they be available to all the platforms (remember that the first one Dead Money was and still is a Xbox 360 exclusive)?

Sorry for you folks but Bethesda head guys don't wish to communicate on that especially the "exclusivity" bit. You should be overwhelmingly joyous instead to know that there are DLC coming, even if it's only for console owners you ungrateful little piece of...

Wow! I don't know about you but I love hearing from Bethesda. Each time you come out of it a little more enlightened about their upcoming projects. They had also things to say about the upcoming The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, mind you, but if you want to know about it go grab a copy of the Game Informer magazine as it is apparently Bethesda first and only approved media for all their communication needs. It's essentially a re-hash of what was already known anyway so I don't feel like communicating on it.

See you next week...
