General News

There are only two items this week. There could have been more but unfortunately someone from the gaming industry expressed an opinion in an interview opinion that I think needed a better and proper answer than the bunch of bitter comments about it I've seen posted on the web this week. It took me more time than I thought to voice my own feelings about the issue but I think that the matter in itself deserves to be discussed because it concerns the whole gaming industry, publishers, developers and gamers alike.

So this was a week during which:

Bioware announced the general demo for Dragon Age 2 and Josh Olin (Treyarch community manager) expressed his views about what is the true danger to the gaming industry.

It has been several months since the release of Mass Effect 2 but we finally managed to put a review together. As good things must travel in pair (and that the delay allowed us to do it), we throw in the deal a review of the DLC released so far by Bioware (but only the DLC containing at least one additional mission).

Each can be accessed via the convenient links below:

If you've been following the Mass Effect 2 DLC (and who hasn't?) then you'll know that, apart from new armors that you just can't seem to pry the friggin' helmets off of, they have much, MUCH more in store for you. It's almost obscene how much new content is coming your way, much like a tsunami of awesome that...

...dial it back a bit. Members of the Cerberus Network just got the Arc Projector weapon for free a few days ago -- I made a krogan do the chain-lightning cha-cha and it was sweet -- but one of the two upcoming DLCs will not be gratis this time.

Read the press release here.

I have no idea what the acquisition of id by Bethesda Softworks' parent company will mean to humanity as a whole, but I find the following quote somewhat reassuring...which is why they say it.

id Software will continue to operate as a studio under the direction of its founder, John Carmack. No changes will be made in the operations of id Software in the development of its games. All the principals at id Software have signed long-term employment contracts, assuring they will continue in their roles developing games at the studio.

Now that they are the exclusive owners of the international rights to use Tom Clancy's name on whatever product they see fit, Ubisoft is willing to give some more details about one of their upcoming projects Tom Clancy's HAWX (previously known as Tom Clancy's Air Combat). Unlike other Clancy branded games, this one won't feature playable ground forces since it will focus on aircrafts and... well, air combat.
